Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Does Turnbull & Asser provide a gift wrapping service?

A. Currently, we do not offer a gift wrapping service.

Q. Why am I unable to access Turnbull & Asser’s on-line store from my PC in the USA?

A. For contractual reasons Turnbull & Asser Limited is unable to offer product directly to persons living in the USA. At some point in the future we hope this situation will be remedied. In the meantime we can but offer our sincerest apologies to our valued US customers (who live in the US).

Q. If one or more of my items is out of stock, will I be charged more than once for delivery?

A. You will only be charged delivery once per order, even if we send it out to you in more than one parcel. Your credit/debit card will only be charged after your order is ready for despatch.

Q. I saw a shirt in your on-line store when I last visited it, but it is no longer there; can I still purchase it?

A. A number of our shirts (and indeed other products) are exclusive to Turnbull & Asser and are only made in limited quantities. This means that the full range of colours and sizes is only likely to be available for a short period. The simple message is that if you wish to own an exclusive line garment then please order early to avoid disappointment.

Q. Can I return an unwanted present for a refund or credit note?

A. If you are the person whose card was used to purchase the goods then they may be returned for a refund against the card used to make payment. Please read our Returns Policy and Returns Instructions carefully. These are contained in our Terms & Conditions.

If you are the recipient of an unwanted present, then we regret that it cannot be returned for a refund. Obviously you will be able to return unwanted gifts if you arrange it through the original purchaser of the goods.

Q. Why has Turnbull & Asser recently raised the price of Classic Shirts?

A. There are a number of contributory factors that have lead to the price increase:

  • There have been no price increases to our Classic Shirt ranges for in excess of 5 years.
  • Labour costs form a significant element of the manufacturing cost and in the last five years alone the UK Statutory Minimum wage payable to staff over 22 years of age has risen by some 31.4% from £4.20 to £5.52 per hour.
  • In the past 18 months there have been very large increases in energy costs. Energy is required to run the machinery and light and heat the factory.
  • We are further improving the quality of our product. We have recently acquired machinery that allows us to wrap buttons individually making it almost impossible for them to fall off. This additional improvement is currently being phased in.
  • Our fabric costs have also risen significantly over the past few years. We continue to buy quality Italian cloth rather than sourcing from cheaper locations in the Far East.

In essence we have decided to maintain and indeed improve our product quality. Most other so called Jermyn Street ‘names’ no longer make their own shirts in the UK. In varying combinations they have outsourced production to third parties in low cost countries such as Turkey, China and India; they no longer use MOP (Mother of Pearl) for their buttons and they use lower yarn counts (ex 2 Fold 100 or even 2 Fold 80) in their fabrics. Rather than following this route Turnbull & Asser has chosen to maintain the traditional quality of our product and this unfortunately comes at a price.

Perhaps our strategy is wrong and what the market really wants is lower cost lower quality products. Only time will tell if we have made the correct decision.

Although a price rise is no doubt disappointing to our customers we hope they understand that it comes from our desire to maintain a quality product manufactured by ourselves in our own factory using quality materials and highly trained staff who receive reasonable remuneration for their services.

Our new price remains competitive with other suppliers of superior quality gentlemen’s shirts.
